Tips for Cleaning Your Batteries
June 14, 2019 2:43 am Leave your thoughtsYou probably know how important it is for you to keep the exteriors of your vehicles and equipment clean. Clearing away dirt and grime can help a vehicle or a piece of machinery operate more efficiently, and can help to prevent rust and corrosion from setting in. But have you also considered just how beneficial it can be to clean certain components that might not be quite so prominent?
Cleaning equipment batteries, for example, is an extremely important step in helping your equipment maximize its useful, efficient life. What’s great is that you can get this task done using items you probably already have lying around your property—baking soda, water, an old toothbrush, a rag, some petroleum jelly and some protective gloves.
Here’s a quick overview of the steps you need to take to clean your batteries, as well as the battery wash equipment in Jefferson, WI you should have on hand:
- Inspect the battery: Undo the cables from the battery (with the engine off) and perform a visual inspection of the battery. Does it appear to be dirty? Is there any noticeable corrosion, or any grime forming on the terminals? Does it appear that the battery case is leaking, or that it’s bloated up from its original size? If so, you may need to replace the battery altogether rather than cleaning it, but if it just looks to be dirty, then you can proceed with the next steps.
- Start scrubbing: Make a baking soda solution and, using your old toothbrush, scrub that cleaner on the battery. It might require you to press down with some force while you scrub, but make sure to keep going until you’ve thoroughly cleaned all the terminals and removed all noticeable signs of buildup.
- Rinse off residue: After you’re satisfied that you’ve removed all the dirt and corrosion from the battery terminals, use a spray bottle to rinse the terminals. You can also use a damp rag to wipe them if you don’t have a spray bottle handy. Then use a clean, dry rag to dry off all of the battery components completely.
- Lubricate: After your terminals are completely dry, rub some petroleum jelly onto them before you reattach the cables. The petroleum jelly serves several purposes. For one, it lubricates the area to prevent additional corrosion, and two, it helps to strengthen the connection once the cables are reattached. Once you’ve reattached the cables, you’re good to start using the equipment again.
These are just a few of the primary steps you can (and should) take to keep your batteries clean and in excellent condition long into the future. These are important tasks to keep up with, because maintaining a constantly clean battery will help you in a situation where your vehicle or equipment won’t start up by helping you to avoid getting stranded or having to halt a job.
